The Stuff in Wisconsin
Enven our great progressive grandfather FDR understood that there's a difference when it comes to government unions. He shows that:
The employer is the whole people who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives in Congress.... Upon[the government union worker] rests the obligation to serve the whole people whose interests and welfare require orderliness and continuity in the conduct of Government activities. This obligation is paramount. Letter on the Resolution of Federation of Federal Employees Against Strikes in Federal Service
We need to fix government waste, but this is done through the means of laws enacted by representatives. So (as I understand it) the protesters in Wisconsin have a right to demand higher or in this case stable wages, and a they have a right to protest demand higher or at least stable wages, and a right to protest, but as government employees their paramount obligation is to the people they serve. If this was a firefighters union, abandoning their posts no one would support them.
